marra.tein is an initiative that aims to encourage innovative thought and dialogue by hosting researchers & artists at a dedicated residency space in central beirut.

marra.tein was founded by george awde and jared mccormick in 2012.  our mission is to provide a space - part residency/part homebase - to encourage independent projects, formal research, partnerships with local institutions, and open interpretations to engagement and practice in lebanon. marra.tein is centrally located in a 1940’s building in rmeil/geitawi and was redesigned by haig papazian in 2011 with the help and advice of local architects and friends.

this project ran from 2012 to 2019. in that time we hosted nearly seventy artists, researchers, curators and writers, many of them with our partners ashkal alwan, the beirut art center and 98weeks, and supported fourteen projects; the work done here went on to exhibitions in beirut, doha and são paulo, and into films and books. the residents and supported projects pages keep who came and what they did.
